How to open a pop-up store in Paris: location, budget and steps

Choosing the neighbourhood, renting the space, designing the fit-out, getting the permits and keeping to budget: the guide to opening a pop-up store in Paris.

A pop-up store (or pop-up shop) lets you test a market, launch a product, meet your customers in person or create buzz around your brand, without signing a standard commercial lease. In Paris, it is also a showcase seen by the media and by visitors from all over the world. But a few weeks of opening are prepared like a real store: location, fit-out, permits, team and communication.

The steps, from concept to dismantling

  1. Set the goal: sales, awareness, collecting contacts, testing a product. It decides the neighbourhood, the duration and the fit-out.
  2. Choose the dates and duration: a weekend, a few weeks or a few months, taking key periods into account (holidays, sales, Fashion Week).
  3. Find the location and sign the occupancy agreement.
  4. Design the concept: customer journey, product display, photo spot, checkout, stockroom. A 3D model lets you approve everything before production.
  5. Build the furniture, decor, lighting and signage, pre-assembled in the workshop.
  6. Check the permits and safety of the space.
  7. Communicate before opening: social media, press, existing customers.
  8. Install in a few hours or over a few nights.
  9. Run the store: a trained sales team, tracking of sales and contacts.
  10. Dismantle and hand back a clean space, then store the decor for the next operation.

A Christmas pop-up store: the timeline

The holiday season is the busiest time for pop-up stores: interest peaks between October and December. To open at the end of November, the project has to start in early October:

  • Early October: brief, budget and location search. The best spaces and department store corners for Christmas are booked early.
  • Mid October: concept and 3D approved.
  • Late October to mid November: furniture and decor built in the workshop.
  • Late November: installation, often at night, and opening in time for Christmas shopping.
  • Early January: dismantling and storage, to reuse the decor next year or for the sales.

Starting late? A modular decor that already exists and that we adapt to your brand lets you open within a few weeks.

Choosing the right neighbourhood

Each Paris neighbourhood has its own audience and codes:

  • Le Marais attracts fashion, lifestyle and designer shoppers, with heavy footfall at weekends.
  • Saint-Germain-des-Prés suits luxury, beauty and publishing.
  • The Champs-Élysées bring international tourist flows, for bigger budgets.
  • Department stores let you open a temporary corner within existing footfall, with a strict set of specifications.
  • Stations and airports reach travellers: this is travel retail.

Short term retail spaces are usually rented under a temporary occupancy agreement or a short lease, directly from an owner or through a specialised platform.

The budget of a pop-up store

The cost items to plan for:

  • Rent and service charges, which vary widely with the neighbourhood, size and season.
  • Fit-out: furniture, decor, lighting, signage, window graphics.
  • Equipment: checkout, payment terminal, connection, storage.
  • The team for sales and welcome.
  • Communication before and during the opening.
  • Insurance, dismantling and storage of the decor.

The fit-out is what makes the difference: it makes people want to come in, stay and share. Modular decor built to last pays for itself over several operations.

Permits and safety

  • Shop signs and window graphics may need approval from the City of Paris under its local advertising regulations.
  • The space is open to the public: capacity, emergency exits and fire-rated materials must comply with French safety rules.
  • In a department store, the store’s specifications set the materials, heights and installation hours.

Making your pop-up store a success

  • A window that stops passers-by: a strong visual, careful lighting, a promise that reads from the street.
  • A simple journey: discover, try, buy, with no queue at the checkout.
  • A space worth photographing, so that visitors do your communication for you.
  • Collecting contacts, to keep the relationship going after closing.
  • Decor designed to travel, from one neighbourhood or city to another.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to open a pop-up store in Paris?

Usually 6 to 10 weeks between the brief and opening day for a custom concept, less for a modular format that we adapt.

How much does it cost to rent a pop-up space in Paris?

Rent for a short term retail space varies widely with the neighbourhood, size, duration and season. It is often negotiated by the week: compare several offers before you commit.

Can a foreign brand open a pop-up store in Paris?

Yes. Many international brands test the French market with a pop-up. A local partner handles the fit-out, the French rules for spaces open to the public and the installation, while you focus on the product and the team.
